Huron Valley offers women with cancer a day of support
DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital’s presents Just for You, a free day of education, emotional support and pampering for women going through the cancer experience.
Physicians and other healthcare professionals will provide guidance cancer and relationships, information on gynecologic cancers and how to feel at your best. In addition, a panel of six physicians, including a gynecologist, surgeon, oncologist, radiologist, pathologist and radiation oncologist, will answer participants’ questions about cancer and related health topics.
Pamper stations will offer a variety of free services, including free hand and chair massages, Reiki therapy and reflexology. Just for You takes place on Friday, October 7, 2011 at Edgewood Country Club. A continental breakfast and lunch are included in the program, which begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 2:00 p.m.

Inforum to Release Michigan Women's Leadership Index

On Oct. 17 at the Westin Hotel, Southfield, Inforum and Inforum Center for Leadership (ICL) host a panel of distinguished executives who will address actions to boost the number of women on Michigan’s corporate boards to create a competitive edge. The event will be presented by Inforum BoardAccess™ Initiative, created to help develop qualified women candidates for seats on public and private corporate boards of directors.
The event, titled “Claiming Corporate Leadership: Michigan Women’s Leadership Index and the Future of Our State,” also will include the release of ICL’s biennial Michigan Women’s Leadership Index (MWLI), which evaluates the progress of women’s leadership at Michigan’s top public companies. As in 2009, the research for the MWLI is being conducted by the Eastern Michigan University College of Business.
Leading the discussion on Oct. 17 will be Rebecca Blumenstein of the Wall Street Journal. She is deputy managing editor, international editor, and a leader of the Journal’s ground- breaking Women in the Economy Task Force. A Michigan native, Blumenstein is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

Hospital, Congregation team up for breast cancer awareness event
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) and the Congregation Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood invite the public to a free program in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at the synagogue, 27375 Bell Rd., Southfield.
SJMO Medical Director of Oncology Services Judie Goodman, DO; and SJMO Director of Breast Services Amy Kirby, MD, are the speakers. They will discuss signs, symptoms, treatment and prevention of breast cancer.
Dr. Goodman is the Cancer Committee Chair at SJMO and a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer. She earned her medical degree at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa, and completed her internship and residency at Botsford General Hospital. Dr. Goodman completed a Hematology fellowship at Oakland General Hospital and an Oncology Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital.
Dr. Kirby, who has a private breast surgery practice in Pontiac, earned her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and completed her residency training at SJMO. Dr. Kirby is board certified in general surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She is a member of the Michigan Chapter of Young Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and American Society of Breast Surgeons.
Sisterhood members helping to coordinate the program are Linda Cohen, Sisterhood President; and Wendy Arnold and Karyn Sokol, Programming Co-Chairs.
The public is invited free of charge.

HAVEN offers new group for men committed to ending violence against women
HAVEN is launching a new group designed to get men involved and committed to ending violence against women. The group’s first meeting on September 24 is open to everyone.
The group, Gentlemen, is described as an activist group working toward gender equality. The group is dedicated to encouraging healthy and respectful masculinity; challenging sexism and other forms of oppression; and supporting HAVEN in its mission to end gender-based violence.
“Although the majority of gender-based violence is committed by men, we know most men do not condone such behavior,” explained one of the HAVEN Prevention Education Specialists, Mark Nesbitt. The new program provides a place for men to speak out about issues and learn what they can do to help stop the violence against women.
“Participants will explore the important role men can play in ending gender-based violence in their community and come up with positive changes all men can make,” Nesbitt said.
The inaugural meeting will be Saturday, September 24 at 10 a.m. at 30400 Telegraph Road, Ste. 101, Bingham Farms. Refreshments will be served. There is no obligation to join the group and all are encouraged to attend.

A “Silent Witness Remembrance Service,” honoring domestic violence victims in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties, will be held on Monday, Oct. 3, 2:30 p.m., at Beaumont Hospital, Troy.
The event will feature an address by Valentina Djelaj, a Beaumont, Troy Emergency Center employee, whose mother was a victim of domestic violence.
The ceremony will be held in the lower level classrooms adjacent to the Garden Café at Beaumont, Troy, 44201 Dequindre Road. The public is invited to attend.
This special remembrance ceremony, kicking off “National Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” will include reading the names and sharing the stories of Michigan women, children and men who lost their lives last year due to domestic violence. Life-size silhouettes known as “silent witnesses” will be displayed depicting the stories of the tragic deaths of domestic violence victims.
“Domestic violence is one of our nation’s greatest health concerns,” Cathleen Meikle, R.N., Beaumont Hospital, co-chair of the domestic violence committee, said. “Our hope is that this event will help create greater awareness of domestic violence throughout the community.”
In addition to the ceremony, donations of items, such as retail gift cards, food, toiletries, cellphones and household supplies, will be collected throughout the month of October at Beaumont Hospital, Troy and Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe. All items collected will be distributed to two local domestic violence shelters: HAVEN in Oakland County and Turning Point in Macomb County.
Employees at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak are donating funds for a playroom make-over at HAVEN.

St. Joseph Mercy expands Senior Fit program
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) has expanded its free Senior Fit program to six sites throughout Oakland County. Registration is being accepted for the free programs, which are geared for adults age 55 and up.
Senior Fit is aimed at improving stamina, lowering blood pressure and decreasing the risk of osteoporosis among senior adults through regular exercise. The program uses chair and floor exercises that build strength and flexibility, help maintain strong bones, control body fat, reduce stress and improve an individual’s sense of well-being.
An initiative of SJMO’s Senior Services program, Senior Fit offers free, one-hour exercise programs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the following locations:

Two other people will receive special recognition awards, G. Asenath Andrews, principal of the Catherine Ferguson Academy, and artist Mary Luevanos.

GVSU plans Women's Equality Day event
The Progressive Women's Alliance joins the Greater Grand Rapids Women's History Council (GGRWHC) to observe Women's Equality Day on Thursday, August 25, 2011, 7 p.m., at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, 303 Pearl St. NW in Grand Rapids.
GGRWHC is partnering with the Ford Museum to sponsor an evening with Sara Fitzgerald, author of a new biography on Michigan political icon, Elly Peterson: Mother of the Moderates.
According to the PWA website, "Peterson was a key leader in two of the most important political campaigns then under way: Gerald R. Ford’s contest for the presidency and the campaign to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Fitzgerald will highlight the roles Peterson played in these battles which capped her long political career. Peterson ran for a U.S. Senate seat from Michigan in 1964, twice served as assistant chair of the Republican National Committee, and became the first woman to chair a state committee when she assumed that role in Michigan in 1965."
Fitzgerald has worked for the Washington Post, National Journal magazine, the St. Petersburg Times, the Miami Herald, and the Akron Beacon Journal. She was the first woman to serve as editor-in-chief of The Michigan Daily, the University of Michigan’s student newspaper.
She will sign copies of the book, which will be for sale in the Ford gift shop.

GGRWHC is partnering with the Ford Museum to sponsor an evening with Sara Fitzgerald, author of a new biography on Michigan political icon, Elly Peterson: Mother of the Moderates.
According to the PWA website, "Peterson was a key leader in two of the most important political campaigns then under way: Gerald R. Ford’s contest for the presidency and the campaign to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Fitzgerald will highlight the roles Peterson played in these battles which capped her long political career. Peterson ran for a U.S. Senate seat from Michigan in 1964, twice served as assistant chair of the Republican National Committee, and became the first woman to chair a state committee when she assumed that role in Michigan in 1965."

New exhibit at the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame

A new art exhibit called "Selected Works from the Michigan Women’s Historical Center Art Collection” opens Sunday, August 7 in the Belen Gallery of the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame (MWHOF) and features works from the Museum’s permanent collection.

Admission is free and light refreshments will be provided for an opening reception on Sunday, August 7, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. in the gallery. The exhibit continues through Saturday, October 29, 2011.

The MWHOF art collection began in 1980 with a commissioned portrait of “Tall Annie” Clemenc. Since then the collection has continued to grow. This exhibit will feature the Museum’s recent summer acquisition, an oil painting by Frances Farrand Dodge of Lansing, a prominent artist from the early twentieth century.
Other works on display include portraits of Hall of Fame inductees, several by fellow honoree Patricia Hill Burnett; art books by inductee Gwen Frostic; landscapes; still lifes; and more created by or are images of Michigan women.

June 22, 2011: Learn to capitalize on female insight at Inforum event
Inforum members and guests will have the opportunity to attend an event presented by Sphere Trending on June 22, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Kent Country Club in Grand Rapids. The discussion will focus on how female intuitive insight has the power to bring creative solutions to consumers via manufacturing, retail and services.
Seventy percent of all household purchase decisions are made by women and with the number of women in the workplace increasing, companies are recognizing the importance of learning how the female personality impacts successful business practices.
Sphere Trending will demonstrate best-of-class examples of companies who are succeeding with female-centric solutions and will offer suggestions for capitalizing on this unique potential. Inforum is a professional business alliance whose mission is to strengthen the business environment in Michigan by creating opportunities for women to lead and succeed.

Lizz Winstead headlines Planned Parenthood benefit
Lizz Winstead, co-creator and former head writer of Comedy Central's The Daily Show, will be performing at 8 p.m. July 9 at the Historic Eagle Theater next door to the Crofoot Ballroom, in Pontiac, to raise funds for Planned Parenthood.Dubbed “Planned Parenthood: WTF (What’s the Fuss)?”, the event opens Winstead’s six-city, national tour to raise funds for the non-profit, which provides women's health services. Winstead said she has been incensed by attacks on womens' health at both the national and local level.
“If creating jobs is the number one priority for politicians in this country,” said Winstead, “why are they so focused on my uterus? My uterus doesn't create jobs; in fact it no longer even does the one it's supposed to.”
In recent months, efforts have been made to withdraw state and federal funds from Planned Parenthood. Agency representatives estimate this could potentially deny 17,000 needy Michigan residents access to life-saving services, including annual exams, cancer screenings and birth control—97 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services.
“Women's health care has become the number one focus of extremists – even worse, it has been reduced to a bargaining chip,” said Winstead. “I say enough is enough, and so should anyone who has relied on Planned Parenthood for basic healthcare, or knows someone who has.”
Winstead’s national tour, “Planned Parenthood: I Am Here For You,” is designed to raise awareness, friends and funds for the organization, and to encourage the one in five women who use Planned Parenthood to speak publicly about the organization’s role in delivering mainstream, preventive, life-saving medical care.
“Planned Parenthood has been there for me in every facet of my reproductive health, and now I want to be there for them,” she said. “The time to stand up for this consistent provider of affordable, high-quality health care is now.”
Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased online at miplannedparenthood.org.
Exhibit features photos by COTS youth

A photo included in the display above includes a note that reads: "I took this picture because I wanted to show that kids of any age can accomplish anything that they set their minds to. One day we will be in a band and she will play the drums."
Monte Nagler, renowned fine art photographer, conducted a photography class for youth in COTS programs and encouraged them to capture their world as they see it. Children also wrote brief statements of what inspired their photos. Thirty touching works, resulting from the efforts of these young artists, will be presented in a traveling exhibit from June 2011 through March 2012.
