Leaven Center offers events for women of color, vegan cooks, girls

Upcoming events at Leaven include time alone for individual retreats at the Lodge, the Weekend Writers' Retreat for Women of Color and Your Food, Your Power: Vegan Eats for the Conscious Cook.

Leaven offers space for individual retreats each month at the Lodge, June 16-17, July 14-15, August 11-12, 2010. Stay for one day or two. Come alone or bring a friend! Take time for yourself to walk, meditate, write, draw, read, sleep, whatever you need to do to regain some balance in your life. There is no programming. The time is yours to make of it what you choose. Learn more here.
The Writers' Retreat for Women of Color, June 25-27, is for those who desire a safe place of peace and beauty to write in order "to make sense of the world", whether through journaling, poetry, nonfiction, or fiction. For many women of color writing has been a means of survival and revolution in a world rife with sexism, racism, classism, homophobia and ableism. And the power of the word has not fallen through our fingers; women of color have used their pens to expose injustice and their unique life experiences. It is true: we write because we have to.

This retreat will be a time for us to support each other in the bringing forth of our truths through the written word. If you often find that you do not write as much as you would like because of a lack of free time, this is the retreat for you. Learn more here.

Eating vegan is a hot topic. Oprah adopted a vegan diet for 21 days to benefit her health, and Ellen DeGeneres is outspoken about her ethical decision to live vegan. Choosing vegan eats is an effective way to lessen one's impact on our environment and demonstrates respect for workers and other animals. We also want to feel satisfied when we eat and to maintain table fellowship with loved ones.

At "Your Food, Your Power: Vegan Eats for the Conscious Cook," held July 9-11, 2010, animal activist and vegan Nicole Renee Matthews will highlight how to create healthy, delicious meals from affordable staple foods as well as how to make seemingly sinful desserts. Participants will work together to prepare food gathered from fresh, local sources. While sharing food, we will share information and ideas and challenge our own stories associated with nourishing ourselves. Learn more here.

On Saturday, July 24, the Leaven Board invites you to a 10th Anniversary Open House from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at the Lodge. Come meet up with friends old and new, and share your favorite memories of Leaven.

"GrrrlFest: An Event Just for Girls Ages 10-14," August 15-19, is a time for girls to be together engaging in fun activities; time outdoors; and valuable conversations about friendships, developing a girl's own opinions about beauty, making healthy choices, and affirming unique gifts and talents. This event will be girls' space - a place to share dreams and talk about what's great and what's hard about being a girl.

Leaders Chey Davis, Christine Pereira and Naadirah-Nicole Shapeley are feminist women who understand how crucial it is for girls to develop positive and healthy self-images and form relationships with women who can serve as mentors. The cost for Grrrlfest 2010 is $225. Partial scholarships are available. Registration information will be available soon at leaven.org.
