St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) recognized its 85 board-certified nurses in observance of Certified Nurses Day on March 19.
Nurses were recognized for their professionalism, leadership and commitment to excellence in patient care. The nurses’ names are listed in an honor roll at the hospital, and each received a thank you note from the Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Coburn, RN.
“This observance allows us to celebrate the professionalism and compassionate care that our nurses exhibit every day on the job,” Coburn said. “Their completion of a certification exam demonstrates their commitment to excellence in their area of clinical practice. With this additional nursing certification, patients can be assured of extraordinary care and better outcomes,” Coburn explained.

More than 20 percent of SJMO nurses have gone beyond their RN credential to achieve board certification. The number of board-certified nurses at SJMO exceeds national benchmarks. Those who receive this certification serve as mentors and clinical experts for their peers.
Nurses are certified by national nurse-certifying organizations, which are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification or the National Organization for Competence Assurance or both. Among the specialties in which nurses can receive certification are: medical-surgical, pediatric, pain management, cardiovascular, oncology, hospice, case management, emergency nursing and critical care.
While a registered nurse (RN) license provides entry to general nursing practice, the knowledge-intensive requirements of modern nursing require extensive education, as well as a strong personal commitment to excellence by the nurse.
SJMO encourages national board certification for all of its nurses.
