Lisa Kupelian and Ani Gharibian have the kind of synergy most business partners would envy.
Lisa loves the creative end of LA Productions, a Michigan-based events planning business, and Ani truly enjoys managing the business. Together, they're the force behind creating the kinds of events that make every guest feel like a rock star.
Their families had known each other for years, but Lisa and Ani met as adults, when Lisa was working on contract for General Motors.
"Ani was the one who said 'You work too hard to not do this for yourself'," Lisa recalls, adding that she started out giving herself six months to see whether striking out on her own would really work. The partners are now in their sixth year of being "officially" in business.
Their first big contract, Lisa said, was with GM. They worked that contract for two years, and the company extended it for three more, before moving in a different direction. And now, LA Events is moving into a new phase as well.
"We talk a lot about the 'Rock Star' experience," Lisa said, "the feeling that you were the most important person in the room at an event. It's the details. We try to really make events with a focus on how to treat the people.
The focus on others infuses every aspect of LA Events, including the company's "Rock Star Blog." Lisa and Ani have developed a quiz for new clients, to better meet their needs. Their desire to help has also led them to do quite a bit of charity work, including a room at a Ronald McDonald House, which serves families with children who are undergoing serious medical treatment.
The partners are also changing the way people look at party planning, because with budgets tighter than ever, many people are doing their own events. "If you have a group of friends you want to do something with, that's three-quarters of party planning. Don't sell yourself short. You are creative."
