MichiganWomensForum.com will present its first ever live, web-streamed event during the Equal Pay Day Press Conference, held in the Rotunda at the State Capitol on Tuesday, April 20, from noon to 1:00 p.m.Visitors to MichiganWomensForum.com will find a video frame on the home page. By clicking the arrow, they will be taken to the live broadcast. There will also be a link under the embedded video to take them directly to the Livestream.com Web site, from which the broadcast emanates. In the event issues arise with technology, the event is also being recorded and will be posted for viewing on the Web site later in the day.
Publisher Joni Hubred-Golden was invited to broadcast the event, which is co-sponsored by the American Association of University Women, Business and Professional Women, Coalition of Labor Union Women, League of Women Voters, National Council of Jewish Women, National Organization for Women, Pay Equity Network, and others.
ProgressMichigan.org has established a virtual lobbying Web page that will help Michigan women join this national day of action to educate women and men about pay inequity and to offer solutions to wage discrimination. Governor Jennifer Granholm will also issue an Equal Pay Day proclamation.
At the press conference, advocates will be handing out chocolate chip cookies with a “bite” taken out, to highlight the inequity. They will also urge passage of a package of House and Senate bills to address the issue, SB 486-489 and HB 4851-4854. Advocates will be wearing red as a symbol of how far women and minorities are "in the red".
According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, in 2009, the national gender wage gap narrowed slightly. The ratio of women’s and men’s median annual earnings reached almost 80.2 cents on the dollar for full-time year-round workers. In Michigan, 59% of women participated in the labor force and earned 71.8 cents on the dollar. The wage gap is even greater for most women of color.
