Pontiac, Mich. — St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) will host a series of free diabetic health presentations to improve the health of people with diabetes at its Mercy Place clinic, 55 Clinton St., Pontiac.
Dates are April 1 and 15, May 6 and 20, June 3 and 17, July 1 and 15, Aug. 5 and 19, Sept. 2 and 16, Oct. 7 and 21, Nov. 4 and 18, Dec. 2 and 16 and Jan. 6 and 20, 2011. All presentations will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sessions are held every two weeks.
Participants are strongly encouraged to be present for the full two-hour experience to achieve the greatest health benefit.
Among the topics to be discussed are: What is diabetes, the importance of blood glucose monitoring, diabetes and nutrition, diabetic foot care (to include a foot exam), exercise and medical management. Podiatrists, internists, certified diabetes educators/dietitians and a nurse practitioner will conduct the classes/presentations.
There also will be support sessions/community forums that will be facilitated by Jacqueline Lewis-Kemp, author of Blessed Assurance: Success Despite the Odds.
Lewis-Kemp will talk about her journey with diabetes. A successful African American female CEO of an automotive manufacturing company, Lewis-Kemp had juvenile diabetes, which progressed to kidney failure and organ transplants, both long-term complications of diabetes. She was insulin dependent for 33 years. Her book chronicles her history of diabetes maintenance and what it was like growing up in the 1970s with diabetes.
The diabetes health series is available to community members, regardless of health insurance status. Space is limited to 25 participants; incentives are available for early registrants.
