THE WHITE HOUSE PROJECT Project

It's so easy these days to look at all of Michigan's problems and think, "This is just too big to fix."

Property values drop like a stone, businesses fail, houses fall into foreclosure and the resulting loss in tax revenues has our state's budget in a tailspin. As long as I've lived here (it'll be 11 years next spring), Michigan's lawmakers have struggled with massive budget deficits.

Eleven years. You know what else has happened over that period of time? Fewer women have been elected to the Michigan legislature.

No one can say whether electing more women could have saved Michigan. But I would love to see how electing more women - Republican, Democrat, Green, Independent, liberal, conservative or otherwise - can change Michigan. That's why I've signed on to support The White House Project. This organization has a very simple mission: "to advance women’s leadership in all communities and sectors—up to the U.S. presidency—by filling the leadership pipeline with a richly diverse, critical mass of women."

To that end, I'm raising $1,000 to fund workshops and training that will equip Michigan women with the tools they need to get involved in leadership, political or otherwise. And I'm doing it the old-fashioned way, one donation at a time. If you can spare $5 or $10 or even a little more, here's how you can contribute:

• Click the "Chip In" box at the top of the page and contribute through PayPal (you don't need to join to use this service, and I'll cover the service fee).

• Drop a check or money order payable to The White House Project into an envelope addressed to Michigan Women's Forum, P.O. Box 921, Farmington MI 48332-0921. I'll forward all contributions to Shannon Garrett, The White House Project's Michigan director.

• Go to The White House Project donation site https://secure2.convio.net/twhp/site/Donation2?df_id=1420&1420.donation=form1 - to make a donation. Under the "Please credit this gift to" section, enter "Joni Hubred-Golden".
