Women authors shine at 58th Annual Jewish Book Fair (updated November 8)

NOTE: Celebrity author Carol Leifer WILL appear at Book Fair on Thursday, November 12, at 8:15 p.m. in a FREE presentation. Alicia Silverstone has canceled her appearance, due to scheduling conflicts.

The Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit's 58th Annual Jewish Book Fair, November 3-15, features a wide variety of women authors, speaking on topics that range from cancer and memory loss to writing fiction and cooking.

Speical events include children’s programs with Fran Manushkin, author of The Tushy Book, Debra Darvick, author of I Love Jewish Faces and a presentation by Marcia Fishman, author of Rudolph’s Nose Knows, with a special appearance by Rudolph, a blind and deaf daschund who teaches children about disability awareness.

The schedule of speakers includes Rachel Sontag, author of House Rules; playwright Kitty Dubin, author of The Blank Page; Shawna Goodman, author of Panache: Montreal's Flair for Kosher Cooking; SJ Rozan, Shanghai Moon; Rachel DeWoskin, Repeat After Me: A novel; Margot Berwin, Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire: A novel; Abigail Pogrebin, One and the Same: My Life as an Identical Twin and What I've Learned About Everyone's Struggle to be Singular; Lauren Grodstein, A Friend of the Family; Leslie Gilbert-Lurie, Bending Towards the Sun: A Mother and Daughter Memoir; Johanna Reiss, A Hidden Life: A Memoir of 1969; Julie Hauser, Mother to Mother: Women across the globe share the joys and challenges of Jewish motherhood; Francine Prose, Anne Frank: The book, the life, the after-life; Kati Marton, Enemies of the People: My family's journey to America; Aliza Shevrin, Tevye the Dairyman and Motl the Cantor's son; Robin Romm, The Mercy Papers: A Memoir of Three Weeks; Sabrina Must, Must Girls Love; Karen Tintori and Jill Gregory, The Illumination; Nancy Bacharach, The Center of the Universe; and many more.

A number of Detroit area authors will be featured Sunday, November 8, 10 a.m. to noon. Special events include Book Club Night, a lunch sponsored by Hadassah, and the Book Fair’s first business breakfast with Barry Ritholtz, author of Bailout Nation: How Greed and Easy Money Corrupted Wall Street and Shook the World Economy. The business breakfast is on Friday, November 6 at 7:30 a.m. and features honorary chairs Former Governor James Blanchard, former Chief Judge Barry Howard and Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson.
