Special Agent in Charge Andrew G. Arena announced today that the FBI is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the person or persons who placed a suspicious package outside of the Summit Women’s Center in Detroit.
Sometime after 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2011 and before 8:30 a.m. on Monday, July 18, 2011, a package was left at Summit Women’s Center located at 15801 West McNicols Road. The object caused damage to the building, which may constitute a violation of the FACE Act, a civil rights violation. The 1994 Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act makes it a federal crime to injure, intimidate, or interfere with those seeking to obtain or provide reproductive health care services.
The Center's website lists its services as providing abortion services to 24 weeks, morning after services, testing for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, contraception education and services, DNA testing, Maternal and Infant Health Program, childcare classes and more.
Channel 9 & 10 news in northern Michigan reports today that the FBI declined to describe the package, but it burned the outside of the building and broke a window.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP (800-773-2587) or the FBI Detroit Office at 313-965-2323. The FBI Detroit Field Office is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the identification and arrest of those involved.
