The professionals at HAVEN who work to end sexual assault do it 365 days a year, but they are seizing the opportunity of April’s designation as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month to drive home a "no excuses" message for young and old alike. During April, HAVEN hopes to chip away at the myths of Sexual Assault. The organization hosted a "Take Back the Night" event on Oakland University's campus April 5, featuring live music, a rally, march and a speak out for survivors. Denim Day April 27, 2011
Denim Day was born in Italy in 1999 when it was ruled that a young woman who had been raped by her driving instructor must have been a willing participant because of her attire. In response thousands of Italian women clad in denim jeans took to the courthouse steps and the streets in protest. The court decision was changed as a result as were people’s perceptions. Wearing jeans on "Denim Day" has become an international symbol of protest. HAVEN encourages everyone on April 27 to wear jeans as a visual sign of protest against the myths that still surround sexual assault. Painting with a Purpose is a program put together by Painting with a Twist, focusing on recreating a featured painting. Up to 60% of the proceeds will benefit HAVEN. The featured painting entitled A Stroll at Night, shows a woman walking alone at night in the rain and is a complement to Take Back the Night. Join HAVEN at 7 p.m. on April 30 for Painting with a Purpose 320 West Nine Mile Rd., Ferndale. The three-hour class costs $45 and includes painting supplies.
