We all know the adage about sticks and stones, but the professionals at HAVEN’s Prevention Education Program believe that the words we use every day have an impact on the world around us, including the people we are closest to.
HAVEN is hosting a workshop on April 14 about words and their power to transform communities. "Language Matters: The Power of Words to Build Respectful Communities," the workshop includes a hands-on discussion facilitated by HAVEN staff.
The workshop will be at HAVEN’s Bingham Officenter Conference Center on April 14 from 3-4:30 p.m. and will repeat from 6:30-8 p.m. The fee is $10 and people are asked to register by April 12 online at haven-oakland.org/news-events.
The workshop participants will discuss the role of humor and motivating language in building respectful communities. Contrasting examples, like jokes about rape and calling young men “girls” as a put down or to motivate them will also be discussed. Facilitators will lead the group in exploring the affects of language and how they manifest in ones’ work/school lives, relationships and interpersonal interactions.
HAVEN has been working towards eliminating domestic violence and sexual assault by building violence-free communities one family at a time for more than 35 years. Giving hope a real voice, the nationally recognized not-for-profit organization offers treatment and prevention services, as well as educational programs, across Oakland County and the surrounding communities.
