Among the vital services HAVEN provides is a place of refuge and safety where people can rebuild lives. Nearly a third of those receiving services at HAVEN’s residential emergency shelter are residents of the City of Detroit. This month, The Skillman Foundation provided a $25,000 grant to provide services for these city residents.
The grant from The Skillman Foundation helps the nearly 135 women and children each year from Detroit receiving services at the shelter. Currently, HAVEN has received no specific funding to provide services to those from outside of Oakland County.
HAVEN operates Oakland County’s only 24-hour emergency shelter specifically for domestic violence or sexual assault victims and their children.
Typically domestic violence survivors find the shelter though referrals by friends, law enforcement, clergy or medical personnel or are aware of the shelter through HAVEN’s website, haven-oakland.org. They can stay at no cost, for an average of 30 days, while children attend school and parents look for work and place to live. While at the shelter, the entire family receives guidance and advocacy services from HAVEN.
More than half – 52-percent – of HAVEN’s $3.2 million dollar annual budget comes from the support of the local community. This direct financial support from corporations, foundations and individuals helps HAVEN provide programs and services to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. This financial support by organizations and individuals means HAVEN is able to provide safe shelter, 24-hour support services, and other resources that help women and children survive and recover from abuse.
